MC1158329 - Microsoft 365 Copilot Memory uses chat history, refreshed settings
Based on Microsoft Message Center ID: MC1158329
What is changing
Microsoft is updating Memory in Microsoft 365 Copilot to use chat history when composing responses and to deliver a refreshed Memory settings page. The change makes Copilot responses more contextual and tailored to prior conversations. The redesigned settings give users clearer visibility and control over what Copilot remembers.
Rollout timing
- Targeted Release: early October 2025 to mid October 2025
- General Availability: mid October 2025 to late October 2025
Who is affected
All users of Microsoft 365 Copilot in tenants where Memory is enabled. Existing admin and user-level Memory settings remain respected. If Memory is turned off at the admin or user level it will remain off.
Why it matters for admins
- Data processing change: Copilot now uses prior chats to generate responses, which alters how existing customer data is processed for personalization.
- No new admin controls: Policy enforcement and admin controls are unchanged. You keep the same toggles and governance points.
- User experience impact: Users will notice more contextual replies and a new Memory settings UI they can manage themselves.
Recommended admin actions
- Review the updated Memory settings with user groups once available.
- Update internal documentation and training if you want to show the new settings or explain how chat history affects responses.
- Communicate privacy and control options to users so they can manage Memory preferences.
Compliance note
